you can port your cell to your landline #. Blackberry is the most expensive but many phones will have web-browsing capabilities, check out centennialwireless.com they have some plans at $39.99 a month and a feature package with free web browsing and outgoing/incoming text messages per month for an additional $29.99 per month.

what you need is a cell phone where you can extend the memory... with a card for example. i think pretty much all of the newer cell phones have recording possibilities and no limit except the memory.... i know for sure that the newer sony ericsson phones can record without a time limit if you have enough spare memory...

I had a KTF prepaid phone, and my friend had an LG Telecom prepaid phone. I think generally messages cost about 30won to send, you dont have to pay to receive... but my friends all said that was expensive. I now have a contract phone, which actually doesnt seem to be any cheaper, but then I guess its because im not restricting myself to how much I use my phone.

I got by on about 20,000 a month, but I wasnt really making calls, just messaging. The minimum prepaid amount is 5,000won. I just went into the KTF 'members' shop to recharge it.

I wouldnt bother renting a phone, a friend of mine did that, and it cost soooooooooo much! No NO NO dont do that!

Cheapest way to do it is to get one of your Korean friends to sign up one of their old cellphones to a company with prepaid. It doesnt cost them a cent, and you dont have to pay any bond or anything.

Initially signing up for a contract you have to pay all sorts of crap 'members' stuff, that you dont actually use, its about 40,000 a month of nothing for 6 months. I managed to argue my way out of some of it, but yeah.. some of its compulsory.
Worth it if you plan to use your phone alot, because the charges are substantially lower, however if you arent going to be in the country all that long, maybe it would be better to look into getting a prepaid.
Just message your friends and they generally call back. All my Korean friends hate messaging, but I actually hate talking on the phone haha.

I agree with jh_sakura.
Supposedly a network is available to some top officials, that's all.
And foreigners are not allowed to bring mobile phones in, not even some people I know who visit regularly on business.
They take them at the airport and return them when you leave. I have no idea how they do it if you enter/leave by train. I left mine in Beijing when I went into NK.
If you smuggle one in (not easy at the airport as they scan all bags) you would probably get in trouble for using it and lose the phone, and worse, some officials such as your guide would be in trouble too.

some US units have lockers at the entrance for cellphones. with what he said in the report as a hacker can control it, well with today's high tech cellphones like the iphone or blackberry its even easier than a old Motorola to actually gain access to. in fact set a cellphone to "airplane mode" where no signals are transmitted, and use it to record sound. during this use it would be impossible for anyone to know its on and that makes the alarm useless hopefully the CF will look into this.
